Celebrate New Jersey's Birthday with us!

June 2, 2009

New Jersey's 345th Birthday is this month and there's going to be a party!

Join us as guests of Governor Corzine, Secretary Wells and Commissioner Davyon Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the NJ State Museum from 2-4PM for the festivities!

There will be birthday cake and lots more, including a special award to 12 Celebrate NJ! student authors whose work has been selected as "outstanding" by our judges.  Equally as exciting, two priceless historical documents will be on display:  the actual June 24, 1664 royal grant that established New Jersey, and a rare original copy of the Declaration of Independence printed July 4, 1776.

All are welcome to attend. RSVP to 609-777-0881. For more information contact Marc Mappen at the NJ Historical Commission at 609-984-0902.  Parking is available at the State House garage.

If you love baseball, you'll have a blast at one of the upcoming Celebrate NJ! baseball games.  Thousands of students earned tickets to the games and their families, friends and classmates are invited to join them for fun, celebration and of course, great baseball!

Many thanks to the Somerset Patriots, Lakewood BlueClaws, Camden Riversharks, NJ Jackals and Sussex Skyhawks for partnering with us again this year to make the close of the School Program and the school year one 4th graders will remember for a lifetime.

300 Students Selected for 2009 Best of the Best Awards!

We are pleased and excited to announce that 300 New Jersey fourth grade students have been selected to receive the Celebrate NJ! Best of the Best Awad for 2009.  Those selected were chosen out of over 1,200 articles submitted in a statewide writing contest about New Jersey. 

Students will be celebrated at upcoming regional awards events:

April 4, 2009 at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park starting at 10AM, as part of the Garden State Film Festival.

April 25, 2009 at the Ocean County Library in Little Egg Harbor at 11AM.

April 30, 2009 at the Memorial Theatre at Montclair University in Montclair at 7PM.

May 9, 2009 at the Geraldine Clinton Little Theatre at Burlington Community College in Pemberton at 11AM.

May 11, 2009 at the Grand Conference Center at Raritan Valley Community College in North Branch at 7PM.

NJ's volunteer community came through in record time!  The Celebrate NJ! School program now has 40 volunteer judges signed up to help us select the Best of the Best from the thousands of articles due at the end of this month. Many thanks to everyone who applied!

Judges sought for Statewide Writing Contest

January 30, 2009

Celebrate NJ! is looking for volunteer judges to select 300 of the "Best of the Best" articles written by NJ fourth graders.  Volunteers need to have a computer, be available between March 1st and 15th and have a love of NJ to apply.  Previous years' judges included historians, educators, librarians, authors, parents, grandparents, and others.  If you're interested, contact Karen Hatcher before February 7th to apply.

Verizon makes gift to Celebrate NJ! School Program

January 8, 2009

Verizon recently presented a gift to the Celebrate NJ! School Program in the amount of $7,500 as part of their Check Into Literacy program.  The funds were generated by Verizon customers who opted to donate an extra dollar or two on their monthly Verizon bill to benefit those organizations whose work supports literacy initiatives.

Over 6,600 students registered in one month!

In just one month, hundreds of 4th grade teachers and media specialists have registered over 6,600 NJ fourth graders in the Celebrate NJ! school program. At the heart of the program is a statewide writing program that meets curriculum requirements for teachers, and awards events for students.  Interested teachers still have time.... registration is open until December 15th.  Find out more...

Welcome kits including fun neon Celebrate NJ! pencils and bookmarks have already been mailed to help create excitement as the program begins in classrooms around the state.

Wayfinding Page now updated

It all began with the Wayfinding Symposium on December 7, 2007.  The goal of the group was to create a statewide wayfinding system to help make New Jersey a more welcoming place and one that is easier to navigate.  In just nine short months this important idea is now on the way to becoming a reality.  This, in thanks to a whole lot of work done by a dedicated group representing arts, history, tourism, transportation, environment, agriculture, recreation, and others all sharing common goals.  Find a 90% draft Master Wayfinding Plan, Executive Summary, Zones and Icons and a host of reports on the Wayfinding Page

Excitement reigns after brief rain delay at Camden Riversharks game

June 19, 2008

Students and families from Camden County schools gathered as the dark clouds moved over Campbell's field in Camden last night, but the clouds gave way to excitement and the students took the field to show their school pride before the Camden Riversharks game against the Somerset Patriots. 

First pitch was thrown out by Rory O'Hara, a fourth grader from Berlin Community School in Berlin. Teacher, Sandra Schwartz from Broad Street School in Gibbstown, won the "eNJoy New Jersey" raffle prize.

Rain couldn't dampen the spirits at NJ Jackals Game

June 16, 2008

Although the thunder storm ultimately won the night, many excited students gathered and marched on the field Saturday night prior to the start of the NJ Jackals game. 

First pitch was thrown out by Marco Hroncich, a fourth grader from Berkley Street Elementary School in New Milford.

Students Celebrate at Trenton Thunder Game

It was the perfect weather for baseball and celebrating!  Middlesex and Mercer County students enjoyed the fun and fans enjoyed a great game.

First pitch was thrown out by Ashlyn Peterson, a fourth grader from Brookside Elementary School in Monroe Township.

Atlantic County Students Celebrate at Atlantic City Surf Game

June 9, 2008

98 degree temperatures didn't dampen the enthusiam and excitement students from Atlantic County schools brought with them to the AC Surf game on Sunday, June 8th.  Students participated in games on the field, a pre-game parade and just had loads of fun!

First pitch was thrown out by Alex Rifici, a fourth grader from Ventnor Elementary School in Ventnor.

Spirited Students at CNJ! Sussex Skyhawks Game

Students from Morris and Sussex County schools had a great time at the Sussex Skyhawks game on Friday, June 6th.  Scooter was on hand to welcome parents, friends and family members who came out to celebrate the students for their work in the Celebrate NJ! school program.

First pitch was thrown out by William Wright, a fourth grader from Mt. Arlington School in Mt. Arlington.

Somerset Patriots Game is Great Fun for CNJ! School Program Students

June 6, 2008

Hundreds of students from 3 counties showed their excitement as they marched in the Celebrate NJ! pre-game parade at the the Somerset Patriots baseball game June 5th.  Thousands of parents, friends and family members came out to celebrate the students for their work in the Celebrate NJ! school program.

First pitch was thrown out by Irene Mitossis, a fourth grader from Our Lady of Mt. Virgin School in Middlesex.

Thousands attend CNJ! School Program Event at Lakewood BlueClaws

Hundreds of students from 24 schools made signs and brought school banners to show their New Jersey school pride as part of the Celebrate NJ! pre-game parade at the the Lakewood BlueClaws baseball game June 2nd.  Thousands of parents, friends and family members came out to celebrate the students for their work in the Celebrate NJ! school program.

First pitch was thrown out by Mason Sheehan, a fourth grader from Cove Road School in Hazlet.

Monmouth County "Best of the Best" List Announced

March 17 , 2008

Over 40 fourth grade students representing eleven Monmouth Schools were selected from thousands of entries as part of the 2008 "Best of the Best" list of articles written about New Jersey.  Students hail from the following schools:  Brielle Elementary School; Farmingdale Elementary School; Cove Road School, Hazlet; Aldrich School, Howell; St. Veronica School, Howell; Joseph C. Caruso School, Keansburg; Asher Holmes Elementary School, Marlboro Township; Frank Defino Central School, Marlboro Township; Nut Swamp School, Middletown; River Plaza School. Middletown; and Wanamassa Elementary School in Ocean Township.

Monmouth County Awards Event:  Saturday, April 5th at the Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park.  The event starts at 11:30 kicking off the Garden State Film Festival.

Award winners from all other counties will be announced by April 1, 2008.

Student Celebration Events Scheduled

Student awards events and baseball game nights are scheduled for this Spring.  Everyone's invited to Celebrate thousands of students who participated in this year's 4th grade program. Judges Awaiting Submssion of Student Articles-- January 31st

Thousands of New Jersey fourth grade students are putting the finishing touches on their entries for the Celebrate NJ! statewide writing contest.  Topics received so far range from the popular topics of Thomas Edison, Campbell's Soup Company and Bon Jovi to the lesser know topics of Samuel Colt (of Colt Rifle fame) and The Jonas Brothers. Volunteer Judges have been selected from arts, history, library and education organizations to review and choose the "Best of the Best" articles to be announced on April 1, 2008.

School Program Registration nears 6,000 students

December 21 , 2007

Registration for the 4th Grade School program is wrapping up and 6,000 students representing 270 classes from schools in twenty counties across the state are participating this year.  They have until January 31st to complete their research and submit their writing assignments in order to be included in a state-wide writing contest focused on New Jersey.  To view the list of participating schools and classes, check the School Program page.

Wayfinding Symposium receives high marks

December 8 , 2007

Nearly 100 people representing non-profit arts, historic, business and cultural groups met yesterday in Trenton with state officials from transportation, environmental protection, and tourism to begin a process of creating a vision for a NJ Statewide Wayfinding system.  The energy and enthusiasm was palpable as the group listened to Lance Wyman, world renowned wayfinding designer, and met in the afternoon in smaller groups to discuss key questions in the process.  Video clips of the event speakers and the report summarizing the work done at the symposium will be available soon on the Wayfinding Page.

If you've ever been frustrated by NJ's unfollowable signage, you'll want to be part of this once in 10 years opportunity to provide input into a process that has the potential to change the way we view signage here in New Jersey.

Celebrate NJ! is pleased to have the support and partnership of two key statewide educational organizations this year.  The NJ Education Association (NJEA) has featured the School Program in their October NJEA Review Magazine (teachers- see page 10-11), and will be showcasing one of the classes in our program on their "Classroom Close-up" program on NJN to view later this year. 

In addition to including us in their membership newsletter, the NJ Association of School Librarians (NJASL) has invited Celebrate NJ! to their upcoming conference providing us an opportunity to reach their membership personally. We are very excited about working with these two very important organizations, two more great reasons to Celebrate NJ!

4th grade teachers, media specialists, technology teachers and librarians may register their 4th grade students until December 7th.  To learn more, visit the School Program, Teachers page.


Statewide Cultural Festival September 29th

Celebrate NJ! is pleased to be a partner with the NJ Office of State once again on this year's Statewide Cultural Festival celebrating New Jersey's diversity.  Festivities begin at 11AM at Trenton's South Riverwalk Park, located above the Route 29 bridge next to the Trenton Thunder Stadium.  A full schedule of dancers, singers, bands, and other performances are listed here. A full day of children's activities are planned.  Bring the family and enjoy this beautiful park and a day celebrating New Jersey's great cultural diversity.

School Program Registration begins September 15th

Students on News 12 "In Our Schools" Program

Students from Murray Chittick School in East Brunswick joined Executive Director, Karen Hatcher on News 12's "In Our Schools" program to discuss the Celebrate NJ! 4th grade School Program. Lizbeth Leapo and Jeanne Ryder from Mrs. Lauren Gillman's class were interviewed about what they learned in the program and got to pose for pictures on the set with host, Brian Jenkins.
